612 graduates awarded degrees at HU convocation

MANSEHRA: A total of 612 graduates were awarded degrees in various disciplines at the 5th convocation of Hazara University (HU) at its main campus here Sunday.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Masood Kausar, who is the chancellor of the university, also awarded gold medals to 58 graduates, including Sahib Gul Afridi of Khyber Agency who got the honour of being the first PhD scholar from Hazara University in Genetics.
The disciplines in which gold medals and degrees were awarded included Botany, Chemistry, Physics, Genetics, Bio-Chemistry, Microbiology, Computer Science, Psychology, Archaeology, Journalism & Mass Communication, Economics, Mathematics, Islamiyat, English, Pashto, Urdu, Environmental Sciences and Conservation Studies.
Speaking on the occasion, the governor said economic development and stability of the nation lies in research-oriented education. Meaningful research activities through linkages with industries are the predominant characteristics of the modern age, he added.
In our country, the system of education needs to be responsive to solve the confronting problems of life, ensure a stable society and better future for the coming generations, he said. Besides others, Vice Chancellor of Hazara University Dr Syed Sakhawat Shah, Minister for Higher Education Qazi Asad, former vice-chancellors, deans and students attended the convocation.
The ranking status of the university as number 3 at the provincial level and number 16 at the national level is an achievement, the governor said, and assured to help complete the incomplete construction projects as well as the proposed projects for its sub campuses at Haripur and Havelian.
Earlier, the vice-chancellor welcomed the guests and said the university started with seven faculty members and 57 students and now it has more than 7,000 students enrolled at its three campuses and 290 faculty members including 65 PhD scholars.
He said 25 PhD scholars would join the campus soon after completing their higher studies abroad. Three scientists of the university, he added, had been recognised productive scholars at the national level. Over the year, he said, 125 research publications have been produced by the university.
