Pre-Step awards 410 scholarships

The USAID-funded Pre-Service Teacher Education Programme (Pre-Step) awarded 410 scholarships to talented Pakistani students training as Elementary School Teachers (EST) while completing the two-year Associate Degree in Education (ADE) and four-year BEd (Hons) Elementary programmes, in several small yet lively ceremonies organised in four provinces of Pakistan.
Scholarships were awarded to a total of 12 universities and colleges including Karakoram International University, Government College of Education Gilgit (Male), Elementary College of Gilgit (Female), Regional Institute for Teacher Education (RITE) Female Abbottabad, RITE Female Peshawar, University of Peshawar, Hazara University, Elementary College of Education Hussainabad (Male), Elementary College of Education Hyderabad (Female), University of Punjab, Government College of Elementary Teachers (GCET) Faisalabad and GCET Dera Ghazi Khan. The newly-introduced ADE and BEd (Hons) programmes have been a collaborative effort between the provincial departments of education and the Higher Education Commission (HEC), with support provided through its USAID-funded Pre-Step in Pakistan.

The ADE programme is designed to be offered in four semesters whereas the BEd (Hons) programme will cover eight semesters. This will be a significant change from the annual system followed by RITEs, and the hybrid annual/semester system followed by some universities in Pakistan. The scholarships will provide support for up to two years to complete an ADE programme and up to four years for BEd (Hons) at the piloting Usaid/Pre-STEP partner institutions that will lead to a qualification that meets the academic requirements for employment as a teacher in public schools.
These scholarships were awarded to pre-service teachers on merit basis. The criteria for scholarship required the recipients to be citizens of Pakistan, obtain at least 60 per cent marks in FA/FSC, pass the scholarship entrance test, and have 85 per cent attendance in ADE/BEd classes with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA per semester. Scholarships valued at Rs20,000 per student per semester have been distributed at the conclusion of the first semester of the ADE/BEd programmes. Pre-STEP is a US$75 million USAID-funded programme working in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and HEC to improve the quality of basic education in Pakistan by strengthening teachers’ education and teaching skills. The programme directly impacts new as well as practicing teachers by helping them to gain revised and upgraded teacher qualifications. Pre-STEP collaboratively builds upon the existing structures and programmes in Pakistan and supports 15 universities and 75 teacher colleges as instruments for change of academic standards in teacher education.

Scholarships distribution ceremony for students of Conflict areas

The poverty and illiteracy have spread extremism, kidnapping for ransom and bomb blasts, across the country shattering the very fabric of the nation and its Islamic ethos on which Pakistan was founded. Mr. Khalil Abbas a veteran politician and businessman has launched a remarkable scheme of sponsoring the educational career of 30 talented students of Hazara University belonging to the conflict zone of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and FATA. This was stated by Prof. Dr. Syed Sakhawat Shah, Vice Chancellor Hazara University Mansehra during the scholarships distribution ceremony for IDP students of Malakand Region. He urged that this financial assistance is bound to bring far reaching changes in our political, social and cultural life through the powerful instrument of education promoting eternal human values of sympathy, mutual respect, peace and harmony which would change the image of Pakistan as a modern civilized and economically independent nation. History is witness to the fact that education is the only panacea for all our ills and this remedy under the kind patronage of Mr. Khalil Abbas and his partners well definitely achieve the noble aims of social justice, gender equality, respect for law and fair play, elimination of corruption and injustices form our society through education. I on behalf of Hazara University express my special thanks to the donors of this scholarship and believe that the great thinkers and reformers like Abbas Khan will come forward to launch such fruitful schemes for human resource development in the backward area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. I would like to emphasis on the recipients of this scholarship to work hard for gaining distinction in their quality learning and research with sincere intellectual application. Earlier, the Managing Director of Own a Student Organization Mr. Khalil Abbas highlighted the objectives of the scheme and said it was June- July 2009 when 2.9 million people were forced to migrate from their homes, villages and town to down country due to terror activities, militancy and the army operations against those who wanted to suppress the society to their own brand of Islam in Malakand division. They targeted modern education, destroyed schools colleges and were involved in all sorts of inhuman activities. If we further look 8-9 years back these activities started from South Waziristan spreading in the whole tribal belt of FATA and than spreading over to the settled district of KPK and now finally could seen all over Pakistan. Going back to summer 2009, one of the very important segment of war victims from the conflict zone of Malakand division were the students enrolled at different universities, professional and graduate colleges. A cheque of Rs. 4,92,000/- was handed over to the Vice Chancellor for disbursement among the students of various disciplines of the university.
These students are belonging to conflict zone of Malakand division by Khalil Abbas, Chief Executive of Own a Student Organization. He added this is the first phase for the distribution of scholarships among the IDP student while we already selected 210 from all over Pakistan. All the selected students will be awarded scholarship poor and talented scholarships.
